Scam help
Scams are getting more convincing, especially now that AI can fake voices and write perfect emails. I want everyone in Fruita to have someone local and trustworthy to call when something feels off.
Not sure? Stop and call me first.
Before you click a link, pay anyone, or call back a number, give me a call or text. A quick “is this a scam?” call or text is always free.
Common warning signs
It’s urgent
“Act now or your account will be closed.” Real companies give you time.
Strange ways to pay
Gift cards, wire transfers, cryptocurrency, or a Bitcoin ATM. Those are almost always a scam.
Pop-up “tech support”
A warning with a phone number to call about a virus. Microsoft and Apple don’t do that.
A loved one in trouble
A call from a grandkid who needs bail money, in a voice that sounds just like them. AI can copy voices now. Hang up and call them back on their real number.
If you think you’ve been scammed
Don’t be embarrassed. It happens to smart, careful people every day.
- Stop sending money or information, and don’t answer the scammer.
- Call your bank using the number on the back of your card.
- Call me. I can check your computer or phone, change passwords, and help lock things down.
- Report it at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
Protecting yourself ahead of time
See my favorite safety tools for the apps I recommend.
Better passwords
Set up a password manager and two-step login, so one leaked password doesn’t open everything.
Safer browsing
Ad blockers, antivirus, and settings that stop most scam pop-ups before you see them.
For families
Worried about a parent or grandparent? I can set up their devices, agree on a family “safe word,” and be their local call when something seems off.
Group talks
I’m happy to give a friendly scam-awareness talk for local community groups.
